RED!!!

"If one says "Red" and there are 50 people listening, it can be expected that there will be 50 reds in their minds.  And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different."  Josef Albers

As I mentioned in a previous post I will be doing several posts on different colours and how they make us feel.  So for my second installment it's RED!!!!

I have a love/hate relationship with red, as a redhead I was teased so much as a child that I came to dislike red, but now as an adult I love my red hair and I can certainly appreciate all red has to offer.

Red is a primary colour and it's complimentary colour is green.  This is fun to try at home  -  stare at a red circle for a few minutes then look away onto a white paper and you'll immediately see a green circle.  Your eyes crave balance so after looking at red they want to see green so they'll make it for themselves.
Cool, eh!

Red's power comes from it's heat - the warmer the red the more red it is thought to be.  As a colour it advances and it draws attention to itself, so it's great to use for a focal point or where you want the attention to be - think of the lady in the red dress or the red carpet.....

Red can make people feel many emotions but those that are most closely associated with it are passion, danger, boldness, anger, aggression, sexiness and excitment.  People who like red are usually extroverts and associate red with the positive attributes of red.

Those who dislike red associate it with the negative attributes noted above.  Physically, red increases blood pressure, appetite, respiratory rates, adrenaline and also can increase physical strength.  The colour red can also cause us to be courageous, aggressive, sensuous, impulsive, overbearing and impatient.  Sports teams often use red to show they are strong and aggressive.
GO SENS GO!!!

And red is a very common colour that countries use in their flags - take Canada's for example red with the red maple leaf.

Okay enough about feelings here's how to use red in your world.  First off red exterior doors are fantastic and draw people to your home.

Blue-based reds are dramatic and go great with dark woods like mahogany which are often in dining rooms and therefore it is often used there.   Soft reds can help to neutralize the cooler colours such as blue and green and with give some warmth to the room.  Brown reds look great in kitchens as there is usually a small amount of wall to cover and it encourages lively conversations and appetites.
Here's some red inspiration:

This red is what the experts say is the closest match to Diana Vreeland's Red Room - it's Benjamin Moore Red 2000-10.  If this is too much red for you try it in smaller doses here's some accessories that will pop in your room.

Painting out the back of a cabinet or bookcase will make the items on the shelf stand out and become more of a focal point.

This beautiful chair becomes an object to desire in red.  The chair colour is Ralph Lauren Relay Red1B11.

A beautiful crystal red chandelier will certainly make a statement.

This one has an almost chinoiserie feel.
And some beautiful red fabrics.
And my favourite red of all.

Cheers!

BARBADOS

A couple of winters ago I had the privilege of spending a week in Barbados. What a beautiful island! Here's some shots of the resort (Almond Village Resort) and the island in honour of summer almost being here!
This old sugar mill has been repurposed as a setting for small intimate weddings - how beautiful would that be!

This tree was huge and so cool!I think this is my favourite shot taken on the shores of the Crane Resort - way out of our price range!

Ashley Greene cast in BUTTER!

IMTA alum Ashley Greene is joining the all-star ensemble cast for the feature film Butter! Hugh Jackman, Alicia Silverstone, Olivia Wilde, Ty Burrell and Rob Corddry have all been announced as stars for the Weinstein Bros. comedy! Ashley has been announced as one of the lead roles! Go Ashley!

According to MTV News:
"Butter is set around a butter-sculpting competition in a small Midwestern town. Garner stars as a woman driven to win the competition, like her husband (Burrell) before her. Those plans are disrupted when a newcomer, a young orphan girl (Yara Shahidi), shows exceptional skill in shaping the dairy product."

Sounds like an unusual premise and like a lot of fun! Can't wait to see Ashley in her role!

IMTA alum Lyndsy Fonseca's film Kick Ass dominated at the box office this weekend. According to EW: " Lionsgate’s Kick-Ass grossed an estimated $19.75 million for a second place spot. (With estimates showing spots one and two separated by a remarkably small $250,000, Monday’s final results may give us a different outcome.) In 3,065 theaters, Kick-Ass averaged $6,445, not a bad debut for a film that only cost $28 million to make". Lyndsy plays Katie Deauxman in this funny film about superheros.

Two IMTA alum have feature films in wide-release this weekend! If you are looking for a good movie, consider catching Moises Arias' THE PERFECT GAME or Lyndsy Fonseca in KICKASS!

Moises (IMTA 2005) stars in this film which is set 1957 and is about a poor group of kids from Monterrey, Mexico who shocked the world by winning 13 games in a row and the Little League World Series in the only perfect game ever pitched in the Championship. This movie is finally enjoying the much-anticipated release in the United States. You may know Moises from his role as Rico in the Disney hit television series, HANNAH MONTANA. Since competing in IMTA, Moises has been one of young Hollywood's most-sought after young actors.

Check out what fellow IMTA alum Alyson Stoner had to say from the red carpet about Moises' film and her own upcoming projects:

Lyndsy Fonseca's new film, KICKASS has been receiving a lot of press. The Miami Herald states,"This shrewd mixture of slick comic-book mayhem, unmistakable sweetness and ear-splitting profanity is poised to be a popular culture phenomenon because of its exact sense of the fantasies of the young male fanboy population."
Lyndsy competed at IMTA in 2003 where she won 2nd Runner up for Young Miss Dancer of the Year and Honorable Mention Young Miss Talent of the Year.
