The movie is based on a true story about an inspirational Long Beach, CA teacher who inspires inner city youth with some unconventional teaching tactics. However according to the LA Times, complaints have come from the high school that the film is based on. The school is portrayed as located in a dangerous area filled with students from impoverished families, in spite of the fact that it is in a middle class neighborhood. The teachers at the school were also portrayed in the film as not caring about the students and being racist, which has also been contested.
