I had the same heating issues while playing WoW on my 15" Late-2009 MBP. I began looking at coolers and decided on the Rain Design mStand. While not an active cooler, it does lift the notebook off the desk surface, providing better air circulation. The aluminum design also helps dissipate heat. As an added bonus, it looks great too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe SSD's with the Sandforce controller such as the Vertex 3 don't need TRIM as the controller takes care of this function.
yeah that's what i have heard as well...
to be honest i wouldn't even really worry about it... i don't think it's going to drastically kill the performance of your ssd and require replacement after a year. By the time your ssd does end up failing, whether you have trim enabled or not, ssd's will likely have come down in price A LOT, and you will want to upgrade to a bigger one anyways.
just my .02 but i know all the worry warts will insist they need trim... i guess do whatever makes you feel comfortable.

They have pulled the action figure after getting a Cease and Desist order from Apple. Grrrr!
If anyone got one shipped before they put the kabash on them, you just made a mint. Will be a phenomenal collectible that will now be a very seriously limited edition!

Not sure where to post "my thoughts" (as if anyone cares) but I haven't been in the right spot at the right time to get an iphone 4. I work during the week so that allows for weekends and nights. I'm actually quite surprised that the walk-in stock has been so scarce. Anyway, this is my first iphone, I think Apple is the smartest company around, they are the leaders, not the followers. IMHO. After calling every store in town that can legally sell the iphone for days and getting on numerous waiting lists, and being told constantly that "I have no idea when there will be more iphone 4's, maybe two weeks" I finally ordered one from my local AT&T store tonight. I'm never home to sign for deliveries and if they won't let me ship it to my office, then I can't do UPS, FedEx, ETC. AT&T let me "pre-order" a phone and have it delivered to the AT&T store, which Apple would not. I'm being told 7 - 14 days for the delivery, so we'll see. Apple is saying 3 weeks.

I wish someone would do a native OSX build of Putty. I'm pretty surprised it hasn't been done. Doesn't seem like it would even take much effort if you have the original linux or BSD source code as a starting point.

Has anyone gotten or heard of anyone getting Windows to run on a Mac without an excruciatingly slow emulator? Is there any chance of this happening in the future?
Windows is compiled for x86. Macs are currently PPC. The instruction sets are totally incompatible. This is the reason for Virtual PC.
Assuming you want to run a much less capable OS then you will have to wait for:
1) MS to compile Windows for PPC not x86 (this did used to happen)
2) Wait for Intel based Macs and hope for driver support/boot loader support (maybe January).

Thank you so much! I've been searching everywhere and wasn't able to find a concrete answer. That just makes AppleCare even more of a no-brainer!

What is a good app for a newbie to create a webpage? I want something simple and easy, free would be a plus. I also have a simple knowledge of html.
After a lot of deciding, I bought and am now using Dreamweaver. It isn't free though. If you qualify for a student/faculty discount it is $99. I am using the book Dreamweaver MX 2004: the Missing Manual (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0596006314/qid=1127826156/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-6951142-5757641?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)
which is helping me a lot. I love the tutorials which you can download from the books website.
I know I haven't given you any thrifty suggestions but I am pretty happy with Dreamweaver and that book. Good luck!

Not only that - it looks like those in Congress who want to take up the case want FRC (SPLC certified Hate group Family Research Council) to partner with them on the cases. Congressional Republicans may want to rethink that as nearly all their research and positions will not hold up in a court of law (for example, a child does better if his or her same sex parents don't divorce, so obviously that must show a child raised by two members of the same sex will damage the child, no study on that needed!).
Yep. I actually think this will be a good thing for same sex marriage. It's a blessing in disguise.

I have been using screen in the osx terminal to get serial access, using the following:
screen telnet /dev/tty.usbserial
Unfortunately I can't scrollback in screen, which makes copying long config files a process of :apple:-C, :apple:-V, and repeat. Any suggestions for native serial support in the osx terminal app WITH scrollback?
Are you sure thats the command you use? screen telnet /dev/tty.usbserial would start screen and run telnet /dev/tty.usbserial in it which I would expect to fail straight away as telnet doesn't deal with serial ports AFAIK.
What you probably want to use, assuming you are connecting over a serial line is screen /dev/cu.usbserial
If you are the only serial port user on your system it probably doesn't really matter if you use cu or tty but cu is the norm when your connecting out via serial (as opposed to waiting for something to connect in).
With that out of the way I can say that screen does have a scroll back buffer. Perhaps the easiest way to use it, assuming you are using the default key bindings, is CTRL-A ESC and then use your cursor keys to scroll around. ESC again to go back to normal mode. Screen also has copy and paste support built in but you don't need to use it if you are using a modern windowing system like OSX. Remember screen was built for use on dumb terminals where, I can assure you, it's the best thing since sliced bread but thats why it emulates its own terminal within your window.
If you do want to use something built in that does't do its own terminal emulation then there is the cu command. Depending on the permissions setup you might need to be root to run it (or use sudo) - I haven't really used it under OSX.
cu -l /dev/cu.usbserial

I've held off on 10.6.4 because of Photoshop CS5 slowdown reports. This update was heavily beta tested from what I remember. Lots of problems. I guess I'll wait till 10.6.5.

I'd almost agree with you on this, but plastic MacBooks are incredibly flimsy machines.
My first apple laptop was a first gen macbook (plastic). It was pretty sturdy I thought. It scratched easily, but that's it. It survived a fair share of bumps and lumps. I got rid of it because I needed more screen...

Permissions repair complete
Verifying volume Macintosh HD
Performing live verification.
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Keys out of order
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.

Hey all,
So the untethered jailbreak for 4.3.1 is out, I updated my iPhone 4, which was a pain in the butt and I screwed up and lost all my jailbreak apps (no big deal since I didn't have very many and I only had free apps, but still, it was a pain), I ended up having to restore a couple of times, yeah, it was messy. What's worse is I have no idea why I did it, ha!
So, is there any good reason to upgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.3.1 on my iPad (first gen)? Any features I'm 'missing' here? Seems to me like it's not really adding anything of value. Thoughts?
