Yep--the white 5.5G lives in the SoundDock, the black 5G did live in the car but will be gotten rid of in favor of the new 7G classic, the mini I just love--my first iPod was a silver mini that I had for three years but then lost, then feeling nostalgic I found this one NIB on ebay last year so I had to pick it up. The 7G Classic in the case is my normal everyday iPod, as are the three nanos. So I'm a little overboard on my everyday iPods, as I certainly don't need four, but the nanos are prime and the classic is just the best...I just couldn't decide on a nano color.:o

You could certainly make an application that is mostly HTML5/Javascript, that was the way that Apple originally intended for the iPhone 1. For webapps hosted externally you don't even need Xcode or a Developer license, but you can wrap a webapp into a "regular" app and then you would.

I recently sold my PC for $1,750 because the only thing keeping me with windows was the games/software, and the fact is that PC gaming is in a sorry state today. Sure, the hardware is there, but where's the AAA games to justify the cost? It just isn't there anymore. I found I was upgrading my hardware just for the sake of upgrading it, not becuase I needed it. Plus, I just don't have time for games like I used to.

About a year ago I bought a powerbook (1.25ghz, 15") and I absolutely loved it, but I realized that I dont have much need for a desktop AND a laptop, so I sold it before it lost it's value. I loved the damn thing though.. The OS, the style, everything..

I also found I have become to attatched to the world of computers / the internet. I want to take a step back and enjoy the better things in life. The biggest draw to me right now is the garage band app in iLife '04.. I'm always recording stuff on my computer from my guitar and mic and I think this app looks great.

Portability would be nice... however, it's not required.. Right now, I think the powerbook line is a little overpriced (compared to what you get in the ibook line) and I know it's going to go to g5 very soon (in the next 6 months.) I also like the g5 imac's (is it me though, or was the g4 design way cooler?)

I can get an educational discount, so $1674 can net me a 12" ibook (Airport / 80gb.. I'd buy another 512MB of ram somewhere else), .mac, garage band jam packs 1 and 2, m-audio 61es keyboard and the m-audio mobilepre usb audio interface. That's a lot of stuff for my $.. But, I'd also have to later on buy an external HD and an external DVD-R drive.. So we're talking almost another $300.

Or I can get an imac g5 17" w/ 250GB, airport, superdrive, 512mb (i'll double that later) and the Maudio Keystation 61es for $1886. Also a good deal. However, I'll have to wait on the jam packs if I do this option.

Now does the g5 imac have both line in and microphone inputs? or will I need the m-audio mobilepre usb audio interface for that too? If so, that's another $150. How does the quality between those and the hardwired apple ones compare?

How does the speed between the 1.2ghz g4ibook and the 1.8ghz g5imac compare? specifically, will I notice it with garage band, and day to day use? I'm also a photoshop wiz, and eventually plan to get into digital photography (another reason I'm drawn to apple.)

And my last question, right now I have a 2.1 set of klipsch speakers that I absolutely love.. But does A) the imac have a good speaker out (or any?) and B)honestly, black speakers will clash like crazy with an all white apple, so are there any white speakers that sound anywhere near as good in the $100-$150 range? I know the built in imac speakers wont do it for me.

    thanks guys..

Yes, I did. But I listed the item as "as-is" with no returns. Is there any way the buyer can get around this?

I wouldn't think so because he accepted the terms of the deal when he bid. It's a legal contract, but call eBay to find out for sure.

My D2 is noiser than my iMac, but I think it depends on your luck with what manufacturers drive is inside it. I got stuck with a Maxtor sadly :(

However noise aside it's great. Not had experience of the Porsche cases, but I gained the impression that it was just a different case design - so go for the one you like the look of.

gnasher729 gave a great idea that would give you a command you could copy and paste to the terminal to see what's going on. I'll give an additional hint:
the & means something special to the shell. It means "run that command i just gave you in the background". You can quote parameters that might contain such a character, or escape it with \.

My Apple wireless keyboard lasts 2-3 months on regular AA batteries.

If your wireless keyboard was backlit you'd have to replace the batteries every second day or so...

:( Mine doesn't last that long, but I guess I do use it alot!! And I never turn it off, or my computer!

Hi. I'm wondering if mixing and matching even Apple production apps affects their compatibility? Moving "up" to a Mac has been a bubble-buster since I discovered the dark side of legacy software and machines in an "upgraded to Intel" world.
I have a "Late '05" 2.3 dual core PPC 10.5.8 Leopard that came loaded from eBay with all the bells and whistles, assembled, apparently, from a grab bag and I have no disks for the uninstalling and reinstalling tricks.
FCP is version 5.0.4, Compressor is 2.0.1, Logic Studio is 8.0.1, iDVD is 7.0.4 and DVD Studio is 3.0.2. (Do all these fit together? Looks like a production suite made from the parts box. LOL!)
I have Toast 10 Titanium too.
The reason I mention that is, I'm having not only exporting problems with Compressor, quality problems exporting in Quicktime Conversion to AVI, but also burning issues with DVDs that won't play in the living room deck.
Compressor 2 gives me the now-famous Cannot Submit Batch message. I've tried all sorts of fixes -yes, even the Compressor Repair that's made for Compressor 3 and above. Again the legacy thing. After googling for more tricks, I have discovered Compressor 2's "preference file" is missing from Home>Library>Preferences. Hmmm. Maybe a new Compressor is in order? Which version should I install since I have all this mixed bag of wares?
So, Toast won't play, iDVD won't play, Compressor won't compress and AVI from Quicktime Conversion looks like crap. (I understand Toast 9 has good reports but since they "improved" it, I have no use for it. Again, the legacy.)
iDVD let me assemble and burn a DVD but it doesn't play properly. I made an .iso in there and burned it with Disk Utility. The deck plays the menu but I won't know anything else until I find the flippin' remote! That's something to remember though: burning in Disk Utility. That and finding the remote.
I can't even use DVD Studio until I figure out how to import and burn iDVD projects because of the issues between FCP and Compressor. So we're back to square one. FCP>Compressor won't work and it messes me up with FCP>DVDSP. Too bad. I like the Apple production apps but I'm about ready to jam CS4...

Ok, just checked on a PC, and its Quicktime is up to date, but won't play it. :( The error comes up saying "QuickTime is missing software required to perform this operation. Unfortunately, it is not available on the QuickTime server"

I googled this response, but most seem to think that it's due to running Windows 95, or an older Netscape browser, and the PC I just used has XP, Quicktime 6 and as basically all up to date, I think.

Firefox crops up on Google as causing this problem, but I tried it in IE, but it still doesn't play, although that error message doesn't appear. My dad (who alerted me to the fact it wasn't working) presumably tried it in AOL and alos had sound but no picture. Not that I particularly care whether it works on AOL, but it does prove it's a browser wide problem.

I have to Test Illustrator / Quark files for Compatibility (specially fonts, etc)

I think the best way will be with Remote Desktop. I have used Remote Desktop for PC to PC and its perfect for what I need and I expect it should work as well in MAC.

    Thanks for advice.

You're phone copies the apps to the computer, so when you plug in a new iPhone, you'll have the option to put those on as well. Even if you delete them both from the computer and phone, and you try to repurchase it, you'll get a message that you've already bought the app and won't be charged again.

If you think the 3GS is smooth, you have to try the 4.

    Wow, that was sweet!

But yes, make that Apple logo appear for an extra 1.5-2 seconds or so. :)
Well, yeah - I played around with that, I just thought it went well with the music as it is, but maybe I'll re-hash it and add a 24" as well...

it won't load for me - anyone else with that problem?

    D

i don't know why that is, it seems to take a lot longer than last night when I uploaded it.

I've mirrorred it on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MdW-X0L_-U), but of course it's nothing like as good quality, and to make matters worse it comes out in the wrong ratio!

I called Apple, they said it's most likely a graphics card failing (I agree).

The weird thing is, is that 10-15 in while playing a game, it completely locks up, but the mouse cursor is movable (weird).

You have to hold the power button to get it to work again. But once booted back into OS X, it's slow, and the screen flickers once, and then locks up again.
The TechDoolDeluxe tests came back normal too....

This only happens when gaming for about 10 mintues, and then the lock ups happen. (weird thing is mouse cursor is still movable)

    Any thoughts?

I've been following MR for quite a while and finally decided to register in the forum since I have a question (will post it in another thread). Anyway, I thought I'll just mention about my switch to the Mac platform as an introduction.

I have used Macintoshes "for real" the first time about six years ago. Then, ever since I got that student job at a mostly-Mac internet company four years ago, I got to work on Macs occasionally. I really liked them, but most of my work is Unix-based (FreeBSD/Linux), so using a Linux desktop was way more convenient. However, after MacOS X was announced, I knew I was going to get a Mac eventually :) . I remember I first was a bit disappointed with the interface because I was used to OS 9, but it grew on me (and my Mac colleagues). During the last two years, I thought more seriously about getting a Mac, but it was only this year that I borrowed a left-over G3/266 from the office and started working on it at home.

I was positively surprised that I actually could do a lot with OS X even on this old machine (especially after I bumped up the memory to 224 MB). OK, application startup times are quite long, but I do alot of work on the terminal, so I can still live with it. Initially, I made an effort to use the Mac instead of my 266 MHz PC. Now the PC has been disassembled and sits in a closet, and I do everything on the Mac. Everything except Windows software development, which I still have to do in the office. I hope to get my first own Mac soon and settle this issue with VirtualPC :) and even more importantly do music composing/production as well.

Anyway, just wanted to share this. Sorry it got a bit long. Hope nobody got bored :).

Even if you know you want a previous gen, you don't want to buy right before a keynote because prices will usually drop if a new rev comes out.

Actually, the prices on refurbs don't usually drop until refurbs of a new rev come out, maybe 2 to 3 months after initial release (although i haven't seen any refurb ipod touches, and believe me, i've been looking).
