HEADBOARDS

As I mentioned in my last post I am decorating my guest room and was looking around for some headboard inspiration.  I want to do something inexpensive and crafty and am leaning towards a simple upholstered headboard, I just need to find some fabulous fabric.

So in the meantime here's some interesting headboard ideas.

Very cute how this one incorporates jewellery and photos.

How about repurposing a fireplace mantel?

This one has a wealth of ideas for reusing vintage or antique pieces.  Large corbeils or column tops as side tables along with two doors as a headboard softened with drapery panels.

Shutters painted a soft sea glass blue would be adorable in a cottage or seaside home.

Just added this one from Maureen over at Maureen at Modecor Muses.  I love this one as well.  You can change it up with a quick cover change.

So which is your favourite?

KLISMOS CHAIRS - THEN & NOW…..

So how many of you realize that these chairs from Restoration Hardware were directly inspired from the Greek Klismos chair (circa 500 BC) ?

Klismos Restoration Hardware
The Klismos chair was a light, elegant chair made by the ancient Greeks.  It was perfected in 5th century BC and became very popular around 400 BC.  It had four curving, splayed legs and curved back rails with a narrow concave backrest between them.

Often the chair back & rear legs were carved from single piece of wood.  The seat rail was generally lower than the tops of legs.  The seat was not upholstered but had interwoven thongs made of a piece of fabric or animal skin.  It was praised for it’s portability, as it was light and easy to carry. Primarily, women sat in this chair – bouncing babies, spinning thread or getting their hair done.  The Klismos chair was long forgotten until excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum in the mid-eighteenth century created a frenzy of designs and fads for all things Grecian and Roman.  The clean lines matched very well with the neoclassical style of the time.

Though, none have survived, it is seen on Greek pottery, sculptures, paintings.

It has become one of the most popular chairs ever invented and it’s been reproduced, redone and reinvented many, many times.  In France, it appealed to those who reacted against the excessive rococo style and in England, it was popular during the Regency period in the early 19th century.  Then it was embraced by North America.

The Klismos chair is primarily made of wood, although as you can see, even some metal chairs have been made.

During the 20th century, the chair was manufactured in lots of new materials – even some lacquered in gold leaf and formed in acrylic.  You’ll even find examples that are fully upholstered (as shown above).

I just finished watching Thom Filicia's Greek Peak Chair on the latest edition of House & Home Online Episode.  Click on this link Modern Kitchen Tour & Thom Filicia's Inspiration  to watch this episode and see how his chair was directly inspired by the Klismos chair.

So what do you think? Do you have this chair in your home already?  Or would you like to incorporate it into your home?

IN HONOUR OF ITALY!

I came upon these pictures when I was checkout out House Beautiful. It is actually in Houston, Texas believe it or not.  And it’s a brand new home but everything in it is old. The owner loved Italy when he went as a boy and he is the one who drove the design of the home.  The designer behind all this beautiful is Eleanor Cummings.

I thought it was so beautiful and in honour of my future trip to Italy, here it is.

The doors are 1850 Italian oak and she used reclaimed wood stone and brick.

6548495

These are 10 feet tall French shutters which were retrofitted to fit these windows.

Love that coffered ceiling with the reclaimed wood beams. So hard to believe that this is a new home.

This is the hallway between the entryway and the living room. The bench is so sculptural against the stone wall.

6548495

Such a lovely vignette with the French chair situated between the beautiful silk drapes.

6548495

This dining room set reminds me of my own – so ornately carved.

6548495 6548495

This kitchen was done to look old, like the rest of the home.  The countertops are zinc covered as is the fridge.  The pot rack is actually an Italian window grill turned upside down.  They didn’t really like it with pots hanging on it so its been left to function as a sculptural piece.

This is the bar area in the family room. That antler chandelier looks right at home.6548495

The powder room – the husband wanted this window grill installed over the mirror the designer, Eleanor Cummings tried to talk him out of it but he won.  It definitely makes a statement.  And they used an old stone sink with all the dents and wear.

This is the master bath and the shutters have their original blue paint on them – one of the few painted wood items in the home.

With this beautiful ceiling the rest of the room was kept small and simple to avoid competing with it.

6548495 I included this stairway in my recent post about stairways as I thought it was so interesting.  Love the chandeliers and sconces and the stone stairs – gorgeous! The railing was hand forged.

And last but not least,

6548495

The same feeling inside is brought outside as well.  It boasts the only new wood in the home – a cedar covered ceiling.

Hope you enjoyed this tour!
